The challenge in the bridge market
Due to the increasing traffic and life loading and/or axle loads, fatigue becomes of high relevance in order to maintain the integrity of existing steel structures. Poor construction details which used to be regarded as less important when applied e.g. to road and rail bridges are nowadays often the starting point of fatigue cracks. Repair and strenghtening of welded details are thus of great importance in order to extend the life time and safety of existing bridges.
Benefits of UIT
UIT extends the fatigue life of welded details, not only for new manufactured structures but also for existing structures in service having a certain amount of fatigue damage. The life time of fatigue damaged transverse stiffeners details could be extended at least by a factor of 2.5. This means that, for the given situation having no or shallow fatigue cracks, the fatigue resistance of the strengthened detail has been restored to the original one. 
Typical application: Ortothrope deck plates
In the last decade several types of fatigue cracks can frequently been found in the troughs of bridges with ortothrope deck plates. The 3 major type of cracks are:
  1. Crack through the deck plate at the location of the connection of the longitudinal girder to deck plate,
  2. Crack through leg of trapezoidal stiffener and/or weld at the interface of longitudinal girder deck plate,
  3. Crack in the crossbeam near the bottom of the trapezoidal longitudinal girder.

Typical application: trimming joints in railway bridges
Before and a few decades after WWII joints of railway bridges were trimmed to be bolted or pivotted. Trimming mostly took place by flame cutting.
